Hello! I thought I might do a bit of a different style of post for once, after so many announcement, update and “Trip to” posts.

Today, we’ll be looking at my logo and the deeper meanings behind it’s veil of simpleness.

My logo, for the unfamiliar.

Let’s start with the text, as it’s the simpler one to explain. The font (Inter) was chosen for it’s simplicity, popularity and pleasant look. It’s not too “default”, but it’s not too crazy. It works especially well for my scenario, as Stuff By Tom doesn’t just do one thing, which makes it harder to get a more niche font.

Next, the name. Stuff By Tom was chosen, as compared to it’s predecessor Tom Takes Photos, it was a lot less limiting in scope. This has allowed me since to loosen my shoulders and do more things under this name. Fun fact: I was originally going to call this Sublingo, but I decided to save that name for something else, as it would make people confused or make them think it was something else.

Finally, the icon. Can you guess what it is? Scroll up for a picture of it.

It’s a hill! Well, I should say, the area above a hill. Of course, in photography, we don’t tend to focus on the obvious points. A road? Nah, let’s snap the sign! A farm? No, a specific animal, that sort of thing. The icon is meant to represent that.

It’s also meant to show how not everything can be achieved by looking at the ground and thinking, “Oh, it’ll just happen, give it a few more months.” It won’t, so you’ve got to be proactive. The other things it represents is creative freedom, symmetry, progress and a blank canvas. After all, it’s not meant to be the focus point, the photos are. The series are. The blogposts are.

Well, that last sentence I wrote just realised how explaining that made no sense. Oh well, it’s written now! Let me know if you want to see more like this post, and subscribe to my newsletter below if you want updates if I make future posts!
