Before you read:
This article is an expanded version of the video I recently made on YouTube. If you’d prefer a more interesting version with the song Yellow by Coldplay, watch that below!
If you’re more interested in the finer details, read ahead.
Thanks for supporting me.
Due to many reasons that are explained below, I will no longer post on any social media, just this website. Even then, posts will be occasional, as my exams are coming up and my focus is shifting to them.
I will still appear at events that will be posted on my mum’s pages and on here if you’d like to support me still, and I will try my hardest to be at as many as possible.
As for the reasons:
Firstly, the social media ban. It’s just one of several new laws from the government that are planned to take affect within the year, meaning that I will legally be unable to use social media soon.
Just so you know, according to new data, the ban will be ineffective:
“Some 85% of under-16s are still using social media in Australia despite a ban being put in place in December, a major new study suggests.”
Quote from Sky
A massive target for hackers and a breeding ground for insane privacy violations:
“Persona’s privacy policy states that it collects not only biometric information and personal details, like your ID, but also ties that to information gathered from third-party sources. It also retains that information and is free to share it with others.”
Quote from WIRED
And easily bypassed:
“…hundreds of children have managed to evade social network access restrictions, even through simple tricks such as drawing on a mustache.”
Quote from WIRED
But none of that will stop the government from ignoring all reason and logic, as “protecting the kids” isn’t the point; the main idea of the ban is to identify as many people as possible on the internet to know if you’re doing anything the government don’t like, and to know you’re a human so they can advertise to you without losing money to bots.
Regardless, at every opportunity I have, I will fight back against censorship and mass-surveillance laws like these (the equivalent law in the EU has all government officials exempt! Interesting how they don’t want to be watched 24/7).
In a way, you could consider me leaving all social media a blackout protest, and I suppose that would be partially why I’m doing it, and I would encourage others to do the same, but there’s other reasons too, such as my exams and trying out other, more financially-stable things, so I can exist in the future without fearing the floor giving out beneath me.
Anyways, make sure to subscribe to receive anything I post straight to your inbox, and I’ll see you in the future. Bye!
